Several Buddist monks passed through Bakersfield Thursday carrying an atomic flame.
The monks started walking from San Francisco Saturday, carrying the atomic flame ignited 60 years ago from the burning ruins of Hiroshima, one of the two Japanese cities devastated by atomic bombs at the conclusion of World War II.
The monks will walk 1,600 miles to New Mexico to were the atomic bomb was tested 60 years ago.
The monks believe good and bad happen in circles, so by bringing the flame back to its source, they believe they are closing the circle of destruction in a peaceful way while opening a circle of peace.
